In med school, students do both classroom and clinical work and may have the chance to take some sports medicine courses. Once they pass the exam to become medical doctors, they complete a residency program that focuses on either primary care or surgery. Within primary care, family medicine is a popular residency choice for future sports medicine doctors. There is currently no residency in sports medicine.
