Chapter 1 How is it possible that kittens in the same litter have a variety of colors and patterns? Jesse and Gabriella learned about how traits are passed from parents to offspring. Chapter 2 Birds glide through the air thanks to the shape of their wings and the pressure of the air moving around those wings. Chapter 3 Some behaviors are learned; others are instinctual. This chapter covered the differ- ent reasons behind animal behaviors. Chapter 4 Animals are adapted to their environments. Their characteristics help them survive and thrive in the places they live. Chapter 5 Living in a cold environment requires some serious insulation. This chapter explored some of the adaptations used by animals living in the tundra to survive. Chapter 6 Species of animals are going extinct at an alarming rate. Efforts to protect the ani- mals and the ecosystems they are part of became a focus for Jesse and Gabriella. Chapter 7 Living things within an ecosystem do not live in isolation. There is a dependence among the organisms there, which can be traced on a food web. Chapter 8 Animals interact with their surroundings in ways that humans can’t. This chapter ex- plored how something as simple as crickets chirping can provide information about the environment.
