The customs, culture, and cuisine of this fascinating country can be examined by looking at four major geographic regions.  Northern Germany: This comprises the Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern regions. It is a land of expansive landscapes surrounded by the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The north is home to some of the country’s most historic and culturally significant cities, such as Hamburg, Bremen, and Hanover.  Western Germany: This diverse region encompasses three federal states: Rheinland-Pfalz, Hesse, and Nordrhein Westfalen, the most populous state in Germany, known for its industrial heritage. Hesse is known for its historical significance as the birthplace of many famous writers and philosophers; Frankfurt, an important financial center globally, can be found in the region.
