Introduction

Students are often interested in learning more about careers, but many don’t take the steps necessary to do so, according to a survey of 14- to 18-year-olds by the nonprofit ECMC Group. It found that while 74 percent of respondents believe it is important to have their career plans determined when they graduate from high school, only 39 percent have taken classes or participated in programs to explore occupations. Many young people are not aware of the wide range of activities that are available to help them explore the field they’re considering, discover career paths, and learn what it takes to train and be successful in a given occupation. If you are a middle school or high school student, here are just a few of the exploration activities in which you can participate: • art and fashion competitions • school clubs • interviews and job shadowing experiences with beauty and fashion professionals • summer exploration camps • volunteer opportunities • tours of design studios, salons, and other places where beauty and fashion professionals do their work • books • websites • podcasts • videos • mentorship programs • resources from professional beauty and fashion associations, companies, and government agencies • being creative on your own (e.g., designing apparel, drawing, taking photographs, using fashion design software)

Is a Beauty or Fashion Career for You? What’s So Great about Beauty and Fashion Careers? Beauty and fashion professionals are the designers who create amazing new styles, and the modeling professionals who display these outfits on fashion runways, on social media sites, and in photo shoots for fashion magazines and advertisements. They are the people who give us the cut and style, manicure, or skin care treatment that make us feel good about ourselves. And they are the people who spot talent, who organize and run fashion shows, and write about the latest trends in beauty and fashion. Many are creative and artistically gifted. Others are experts in business, marketing, advertising, sales, or merchandising. Beauty and fashion careers are available for people with high school diplomas all the way through graduate degrees—although only a bachelor’s degree is required for many occupations. You can even train for some positions via an apprenticeship (a formal

training program that combines supervised practical experience and classroom instruction). This training method—unlike college—is free, and you will earn a salary while you learn. A wide range of work environments are available in beauty and fashion. Models, coordinators, and photographers work indoors and outdoors. Cosmetology workers are employed in salons, or offer their services from home-based businesses. Makeup artists who are employed in the film industry work on movie sets in exotic locales or perhaps simply the backlot of a studio in Los Angeles. Marketing, advertising, and business professionals work in offices and other settings. When it comes to earnings, fashion and fine art professionals earn much higher salaries than most workers in the beauty sector. For example, workers in art and design earn a median annual wage of $48,220, according to the US Department of Labor (DOL). This is higher than the median annual wage ($45,760) in all occupations. And median earnings for fashion designers ($77,450) and illustrators ($60,820) exceed the median. Top models can earn more than $1 million a year. On the other hand, workers in personal care and service occupations earn a median annual wage of only $29,450—which is much lower than the median for all workers. Earnings can be higher for hairstylists and other personal-care workers who become well known for their creativity and/or launch their own businesses. The employment outlook for beauty and fashion professionals varies by career, but it seems that job opportunities in the beauty industry will be more numerous than in the fashion industry. Employment for barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists is projected to grow 11 percent from 2021 to 2031, according to the DOL. This is much faster than the average for all occupations. During this same time period, job opportunities for manicurists and pedicurists are projected to grow 22 percent, and employment for skincare specialists

will increase 17 percent. Population growth, the continuing need for regular hair-care services, and increasing demand for hair coloring, straightening, and other advanced hair treatments will fuel growth for barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists. Manicures and pedicures will continue to be in demand by individuals at all income levels,

because they are viewed as a popular low-cost luxury service. The need for skincare specialists will expand as a result of the growing population, an increasing interest in fighting the effects of aging, and the need to replace workers who leave the field. Despite the strong employment growth in these and other beauty professions, it’s important to remember that many occupations in the beauty industry pay less than the average for all careers. Many people start out in entry-level cosmetology and nail and skin care positions before launching their own businesses (which can allow them to earn higher incomes) or leaving the field for higher-paying careers. People love beautiful clothes, hip handbags and sneakers, fashion blogs and other social media sites, fashion reality shows, and almost anything to do with the fashion world. Many people want to enter this relatively small industry because it seems exciting, creatively fulfilling, and lucrative. As a result, competition for full-time job is strong. Employment for fashion designers—one of the most popular fashion careers—is expected to grow only 3 percent from 2021 to 2031. And demand for self-employed fashion designers will actually decline due to competition from large-scale clothing retailers that employ many designers and that can create designs less expensively than one- or two-person firms. Job opportunities for models are expected to grow faster than the average, but this prediction can be misleading, because many jobs are part-time and low-paying, and only about 500 new modeling positions become available each year in the United States. The bottom line: The fashion industry is highly competitive, and it takes extreme talent, drive, and ambition to land the best jobs. An easier way to break into the industry is to enter via business, social media, merchandising, marketing, and advertising positions. Many more job openings are available in these careers, and they also offer better opportunities for advancement.
