A lot of the early cases involved THC-infused vape juices that people had purchased online, often illegally or from shady manufacturers. However, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) soon found that in some of the vaping- related lung illness cases, the victims had used vape juices that did not contain THC. As a result, they had to expand the scope of their search to find the real problem.
By the spring of 2020, state and federal health officials had investigated thousands of cases of vaping-related lung illnesses in the United States, including dozens that ended in the vaper’s death. Nearly half of the cases involved e-cigarette users under the age of twenty-five.
