WINS SECOND CY YOUNG AWARD In 2019, Verlander was once again voted the winner of the AL Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in the league. He led the Major Leagues in wins, going 21–6 on the season. Verlander’s 34 starts and 223 inning pitched were also the most in all of MLB, and he led all pitchers with a .803 WHIP as well. Toss in a career-high 300 strikeouts en route to an Astros playoff appearance, and his Cy Young worthiness could not be denied. It was, however, a very close decision, as Verlander beat teammate Gerrit Cole by just 12 points in the vote. At thirty-six years old, Verlander was the 20th pitcher to win multiple Cy Youngs, and the only one to have as many as eight seasons in between awards. At the beginning of the 2020 season, Verlander was the active leader in career wins and strikeouts.
