Picks Up Career Strikeout Number 3,000 Verlander pitched a game typical of his 2019 season in a 6–3 Astros win against the Los Angeles Angels on September 28th. He threw six innings of four-hit ball, logging a dozen strikeouts for his MLB-leading 21st win of the season. Verlander entered the game with 2,994 career strikeouts, including 288 on the season. With this effort, he hit two significant milestones. Verlander surpassed the 300 strikeout mark in a season for the first time. Even more impressively, he became only the 18th pitcher all-time with more than 3,000 career strikeouts. The first 2,373 strikeouts of Verlander’s career were delivered in a Detroit uniform. He became the active leader in career strikeouts following

the 2019 season with the retirement of New York Yankees’ lefthander CC Sabathia.

Justin Verlander became the 18th pitcher in major league history to join the 3,000-strikeout club when he fanned the Angels’ Kole Calhoun during the 2019 season.
