S outh Korea is small but mighty, taking up a space that is slightly smaller than the state of Pennsylvania. Located in the southern half of the Korean peninsula , South Korea is located near China and North Korea, and Japan is across the Sea of Japan. South Korea shares one of the world’s most heavily militarized borders with North Korea. Geography The country has maritime claims, including the Korea Strait . It also has mountainous, hilly terrain with wide coastal plains located in the south and western regions of the country. Approximately 3,004 square miles (7,790 square kilometers) are irrigated. Around 70 percent of the country is mountainous, so the population tends to be found in lowland areas in dense cities.
