But despite this, the importance of Mendel’s work was not immediately understood. Mendel’s Factors Most early theories were just assumptions. Mendel was the first to demonstrate the phenomenon of transmission of characteristics in a practical form. He was the first to declare that heredity is controlled by particles called germinal units or factors. He also stated that these factors were present in all cells and were transmitted from one generation to other through germ cells (gametes).
