Whether someone takes drugs derived from opium poppies or those made in a laboratory, the brain responds to them in the same manner on a purely chemical level. A person may make a choice to take drugs in the first place. Once the addiction becomes established, they no longer have a choice about whether they will continue to use drugs. The addict’s brain chemistry has changed as a result of their drug use.
