hillclimbs and endurance contests. This continued and the Racing Department, headed by Bill Harley with William Ottaway as assistant engineer, was formed two years later. By the time the factory was enlarged to a six-story building in 1912, the production of Harley- Davidsons had surpassed an annual total of 5,600 bikes. The company

now offered parts and accessories and could boast more than 200 dealers nationwide. They also began exporting H-Ds to Japan, and by the end of the following year were manufacturing around 13,000 machines. The single was upgraded in 1913, with engine capacity growing to 35 ci (565 cc) and the adoption of the

mechanical inlet valves. Available in either belt- or chain-driven versions it was affectionately designated the 5-35 (based on figures of 5 hp, 35 ci) and production would run until 1918. The company also briefly offered the Forecar Delivery Van based on a V-twin, but a dramatic turn of events was just around the corner.
