The Harp for the 1939 New York World’s Fair. The sculpture was a harp that also included singing African American figures. She couldn’t afford to cast the plaster sculpture in metal, so The Harp ended up be- ing destroyed. Augusta tried to set up a small art gallery for African American art- ists, and she held her own small gallery showings. She never made enough money to keep her efforts going, though, so she eventually re- tired to the Catskill Mountains in New York. Today, though, her work is still remembered, and it still inspires other artists. Augusta proved that success means more than just a lot of money!
