Make Connections: A Love of Photography During Kevin’s junior year of college, he traveled to Italy to study photography. He brought a very powerful SLR camera with him, but his teacher immediately swapped it with a less powerful cam- era. Kevin says this experience taught him “the beauty of vintage photography and also the beauty of imperfection.”

STANFORD UNIVERSITY One of the reasons Stanford University has attracted so many young entrepreneurs is because of its convenient location. Stanford, Califor- nia, is part of a larger area known as Silicon Valley, where many tech- nological startups begin. Some of the brightest minds have studied and graduated from this well-known university.

Make Connections: Silicon Valley “Silicon Valley” is the nickname given to a region in northern California. It’s home to many of the world’s largest technology corporations, as well as thousands of small startups. The nickname started in the 1970s because of the many manufacturers of silicon chips (used in computers and other electronic devices) that were located there. Today, Silicon Valley continues to be a center for high-tech businesses.
