First Lessons It is never too soon to start training your puppy—it is much easier to establish the behavior you want rather than trying to break bad habits. S tart by finding a reward that your puppy values; this could be a food treat, or some pups are motivated by playing with a toy. In order to train a puppy successfully, he must have a reward that is worth working for. In the following exercises, a treat is used as a lure and a reward, but a toy can be used in exactly the same way.
