Assessing
the Litter
Who can resist an adorable puppy?
You would need a heart of stone to
turn your back on a litter of pups, but
this is a time when you must keep a
cool head. You are taking on a dog for
the duration of his life, and you do not
want to face possible heartbreak by
buying a sickly or unsuitable puppy.
Look for the following signs of a healthy,
well-reared litter:
• The environment where the puppies are kept
should be clean and smell fresh.
• The puppies should come running to greet you,
and they should be lively and playful.
• The pups should not be pot-bellied, which
could indicate the presence of roundworm.
