Hounds
These are the dogs that were bred for
hunting, using their scenting ability
or eyesight to hunt prey. Hounds are
divided into two smaller groups—
sighthounds and scent hounds.
S
centhounds come in all shapes and sizes,
from the lofty Irish Wolfhound to the long, low
Dachshund. The Bloodhound and the Basset
Hound are highly recognizable members of this
group.
Sighthounds are fast-moving and athletic, and tend
to share an elegance in appearance. They include the
Greyhound, the fastest dog in the world, the Afghan
Hound with his long, flowing coat, and the Basenji, a
hunting dog from Africa.
