Individual cities that enacted handgun bans in the 20th century also saw limited or mixed results. The Washington, D.C., handgun ban (which eventually would be overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 2008 District of Columbia v. Heller case) has been linked to a 25 percent reduction in gun homicides in the city between the late 1960s and the 1980s, as well as a similar reduction in gun suicides.
