Customers living in the state where an online business was located would need to pay sales tax. This meant Californians would be forced to pay more money for their purchases, while customers in other states would not have to. The state of California has a very large population, and Bezos feared he would lose many of his California customers to other businesses if he stationed his warehouse in Silicon Valley.
