What Does It Mean to Be Gender Expansive?

From Birth All of us are born with expectations put on us. From the moment we come into the world, people assume that we will do certain things and fill certain roles. Though these expectations vary among cultures, gender is perhaps the most important factor in what will be expected of us. When we are born, we are assigned a gender, usually based on what is perceived as our biological sex. Almost always, people in our culture are assigned one of only two options: male or female, boy or girl, man or woman. These are simple words that carry a massive amount of meaning in our culture. This simplification of human experience to only two possibilities is called the gender binary .
