Slavery in North America is well known, but Brazil and other South American countries also imported millions of slaves from Africa.

The Portuguese also inadvertently brought diseases for which the natives had no natural immunity. The native population numbers plummeted. To replace the native peoples, the Portuguese began importing slaves from Africa. Eventually more than four million crossed the Atlantic. That’s at least 10 times the number of slaves brought to North America and nearly half the worldwide total.
