Tourism in Egypt Egypt is usually a very popular tourist destination. More than 14 million people visited there in 2010, but the numbers fell off in following years due to terrorist actions that killed many, including tourists. A jet full of vacationers was shot down in 2015. Continued political unrest has also driven some tourists away. Recent annual tourist counts were below nine million, but officials are hoping that people will return in big numbers. There is a lot to see in Egypt for visitors. The pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx are the most famous, but many Europeans look to beachside resorts on the Red Sea and Mediterranean Seas. The Red Sea is also a popular spot for divers. The warm waters are home to one of the world’s largest reefs, packed with fish for underwater explorers to see (above).
