The Aftermath
F ollowing his capture, a SWAT team transported Cavalcante to the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Avondale, Pennsylvania. Detectives would interview him there, establishing some interesting context for the manhunt. Reportedly, Cavalcante had not eaten for the first three days after his jailbreak. Afterward, he had primarily relied on stolen watermelons and creek water for sustenance. He had made sure to hide his waste to avoid detection from police. The fugitive also told authorities that it had been challenging to survive out in the wild, with Supervisory Deputy US Marshal Rob Clark claiming that Cavalcante had said, “It wasn’t difficult because of the environment or the terrain. It was difficult because the law enforcement presence was increasing every day.” (Asma-Sadeque 2023) Cavalcante even claimed that he had considered surrendering at one point due to the heavy law enforcement presence near where he had been hiding.
